Crab

Found in Kerala’s backwaters and mangrove areas, this crab is prized for its huge claws and dense, sweet flesh. Unlike smaller crabs, mud crab meat is firm and rich, making it perfect for bold Kerala preparations with coconut, spices, and curry leaves.
Smaller and lighter than mud crab, it has a thinner shell and flatter body, with distinctive blue-tinted legs. The meat is sweet, delicate, and slightly flaky, though less abundant than njandu, which makes it quicker to cook and easier on the wallet.
Found in streams, paddy fields, canals, and village ponds, these crabs are much smaller than mud or sea crabs, with hard shells and very little meat. What they lack in size, they make up for in strong, earthy flavor.
